Florida Bug Jam 2016 Car Show T-shirt/Poster Art

Last year I got to do art for the 2015 Florida Bug jam.  It was a Star Wars influenced design and it went over extremely well.  When I got the call this year there was a little intimidation.  It’s hard to follow up STAR WARS!!!  I mean, that’s like coming on stage to sing after Mel Torme or  Blossom Dearie!  Tough order for sure.

It was cool cause the expectations were lowered and most folks understood.  That however did not stop us from going with a Marvelesque theme and putting our best foot forward!

This is where the design landed.  It was a blast to get a chance to be creative and give my take on what these heroes would drive.

As always I started out with a rough sketch.  I know it’s very plain, but I saw the entire design at this stage.  The rest of the steps are below.

I went in and redrew the vehicles.  I tried to give the heroes some specific bits that spoke directly to their character.  I’m a Marvel fan so I didn’t need to look up much reference.  It was fun to cut loose.

After I locked down the pencil art, I dropped in some flat colors.  It was at this point that I did a funky hip shake thing.  My wife witnessed it and made me swear to never do it again….it was dope though…just sayin.  :)

Here’s a closeup on the detail work.  I thought it would be cool to render out a 3 piece 5 spoke wide 5 VW wheel.  I don’t know that it’ll ever be built, but I was happy to give it a whirl.

Here’s a look at the near complete tone render.  Pretty cool IMO.  Lotta action.  I was glad I picked the layout I did.

For the final I added some town background, smoke, and lettering.  It’s a Florida based show so palms are always acceptable.  All in all it was a cool design to work on.  I need to give a shout out to Randy Y and Hunter H for the shot.  Great cats to work with.

I believe you can still order shirts and other swag on their site.  Click here.

OK…that’s all…thanks for your time.
